Somme is one of the 83 departments created after the French Revolution in 1790.

It is situated in the north west of the region, and is the only department to have access at the coast. Its administrative centre is Amiens, which is also the administrative centre of Picardy. The surroundings of Amiens are many natural lakes

As far as the economy is concerned, Picardy is mainly an agricultural region (large fields and and gravel pits, explaining why this region is famous for its numerous lakes). It has above all specialized in the sugar beet production (first producer in France), but it also produces wheat and potatoes. As regards its industry, Picardy is present on the plastics engineering sector, but also on the food industry of course.

The Somme department offers also breathtaking landscapes where nature is omnipresent, from seafront, to forests, including lakes and rivers. The Somme Bay is even listed amongst the most beautiful bays in the world!

Somme is 2hours from Calais by motorway A26. By plane the Beauvais airport with low cost companies such as Ryanair.
